Bane with his songbird

“Bane, please. Don’t do this.”

It was a quiet plea, barely more than a whisper. Bane sighed, the mask making the sound more mechanical. And more monstrous. “We all have our place, Detective. I am a faithful servant of the shadows, and you are the hero who will destroy me.” John had become very skilled at reading Bane’s expressions; the man’s eyes were tight and revealed that he was not unaffected by this fatal choice.

”You aren’t a dog, Bane. You can leave with me. Die in this war and star fresh somewhere else!” John was babbling and his voice was strained; they had yelled and argued about this too many times. “John,” Bane spoke in hushed tones. It was rare when Bane called him by his first name, and a sense of calm and something like love always washed over Detective Blake whenever he did. Bane brushed his thumb through his short hair, before resting gently on his shoulder. John should have felt scared that Bane’s large hand would wrap tightly around his neck, but their hatred of the other had ebbed away as they had chance meetings. An unlikely match, a cop and a villain, but they were so different from everyone else and it slowly drew them together.

“John, you’re speaking nonsense. I will never walk in a hero’s footsteps as you do. I have tried,” John’s eyes widened, he had not heard Bane say that before, “But my efforts crumbled before my very eyes. I was always meant to be a dog. Filthy and violent; below everyone else. A dog cannot hope for anything better than to serve its master. But you, John,” Bane stepped closer, close enough for John to feel the heat coming off Bane’s massive body. John closed his eyes for a moment before looking straight at Bane. The man’s eyes were pools of grey, like the sea on a cloudy day. Clouds that could either mean an impending storm, or that the storm has passed. Bane’s eyes were tired and sad. The storm was coming, but this time, he would drown.

“You are a bird. You can fly anywhere you like. Higher and higher until no evil can touch you. And I, a dog, can only watch from below.” John was done hearing Bane talk about this, and he reached up to plant a light kiss on the mask. Where Bane’s mouth was.

Bane stood still, even more than he already was. They had never kissed before. Bane closed his eyes, as if to burn the moment into his memory. “Good bye, my songbird.”

The shadows enveloped Bane, and John was left alone.

Omg this is so good! It melts my heart and then breaks it into a million tiny pieces. I want more! I want a story of what led up to this moment, and what happens after. I want more of this relationship for them because it’s so heartbreaking and perfect. Please pretty please, more!
